Orange County is also known as O.C. It is located in Southern California, within the Los Angeles metro area. The 2020 census shows that it is the third most populous county in California, and the sixth most populous in the United States. Orange County has a population that is higher than Washington, D.C. and 19 American states. Orange County is a suburban county, but it has the distinction of being California's second most densely populated, after San Francisco County. Anaheim, Santa Ana and Irvine, with each having over 300,000 inhabitants, are the most populous cities in the county. Santa Ana is the county seat. Orange County includes six cities on the Pacific Coast, including Seal Beach and Huntington Beach.
Orange County is a part of the Los Angeles, Long Beach and Anaheim Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to 34 incorporated towns. Older cities like Tustin and Santa Ana have historic downtowns dating back to the nineteenth century. Newer commercial developments are located along the Interstate 5 Freeway, between Disneyland and Santa Ana as well as between South Coast Plaza, and the Irvine Business Complex. These newer areas, which are often called "edge cities," can be found between the South Coast Plaza, and the Irvine Business Complex. Commercial establishments are also concentrated around the Irvine Spectrum. Orange County is dominated by single-family houses, but the north and central areas are more densely populated and urbanized than the south, which is mainly suburban.
